A Writing-Note on The Development White Book of Liberal Arts College NYCU—Shiang-Jang Tzeng

Paul Romer, the laureate of 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics, and Daron Acemoglu, the winner of 2005 Clark Prize (he is also the author of  “ Why Nations Fail: Power, Wealth and Poverty ” and “ Power and Progress Power and Progress : Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity ”) has always emphasized that the development blueprint or strategy not only plays a key anchoring role for an organization (as large as a country or as small as a family), but also affects whether the organization can develop sustainably and stably. If the emphasis of these two great economists is applied to the library of our school, then  “ The Development White Book of Liberal Arts College NYCU (hereinafter referred to as the Library White Book) ” should correspond to the aforementioned key-role views “ anchor ”.

Around mid-November 2023, under the instructions of the President Lin Qi Hong and the planning of the Dean of the Liberal Arts College Yang Gu Yang, two teachers, Chang Li Hong and Chen Yi Ping (they are also the Associate Deans of the Liberal Arts College), were instructed to guide the Research and Development section and begin working on Liberal Arts College White Paper. In the early stage of the compilation process, the Research and Development section collected data from the “Center of  Human Science", "Center of Physical Education and Sports", "Arts Center", "Sustainable and Peer Education Center" and "Arete Honors Program". In addition to these abundant information from related depts, it is particularly crucial to define the aforementioned "anchor" from the two-way perspective of inside and outside the Liberal Arts College. In this regard, the Dean of Liberal Arts College, Yang Gu Yang, has set out the direction of "free development of humanistic values" as the anchor, which not only coincides with the main connotation of domestic university law - "academic autonomy(including research and teaching)" Together, it will have an anchoring effect on the subsequent preparation of the Liberal Arts College White Book.

Continually, the two associate deans further elaborated on the direction outlined by the dean, and based on the NYCUl’s advantages in information technology, they proposed: “The meaning of Liberal Arts Education for a complete person is In building its core operating system, it includes the establishment of a person's vision of life, curiosity about the truth, attitude towards life, knowledge management, and basic values and other core qualities." (For more specific content, please stay tuned for the LAC White Book. officially published). The interpretation of Liberal Arts Education by the two associate librarians guided the R&D section to start from the micro level of individual learning and begin to define the NYCU’s dynamic goal path of liberal arts education: self-exploration → lifelong learning → perceptual care. This dynamic goal path should appear for the first time in a liberal art discussion related to LAC, and it also reveals the correlation and complementarity between the progress of goal paths (For more specific content, please stay tuned for the LAC White Book. officially published).

On the strategic direction of implementing the aforementioned goals, the R&D section compiled a comprehensive practical development strategy for the four major aspects and eight major competencies based on the existing organizational structure of LAC and reserved possible future adjustment flexibility, explaining how to steadily develop from the inner knowledge and ethical cultivation of individuals to the external altruistic practice, we cultivate talents with liberal arts qualities from the overall perspective.

In addition to the aforementioned main framework, the LAC White Book also summarizes the performance of the current centers and academic units in corresponding to the aforementioned three major educational goals and related cultivation strategies, and further provides certain development commitments for the future liberal arts education of the school, while also self-motivation and review some shortcomings of LAC at present. It is expected that this LAC White Book will receive diverse feedback from all walks of life after it is officially published in the near future, and will be edited accordingly to keep pace with the times and produce more liberal arts academic publications with the features of NYCU.
